Season so far on the Farne Islands
Spring has arrived in all its glory on the Farne Islands, bringing with it the bustling activity of seabird nesting season. As the seas have calmed a bit, the islands are teeming with life, with Guillemots, Puffins, and Oystercatchers all beginning to lay their eggs. This is an exciting time for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, offering a front-row seat to one of nature’s most fascinating spectacles.
- Guillemots: The first Guillemot eggs were spotted on April 30th.
- Puffins: Our first Puffin egg made its debut on May 6th.
- Oystercatchers: The first Oystercatcher egg was laid on May 12th.
It’s all happening now on the Farnes, and there’s no better time to witness this vibrant display of new life.
Despite the occasional challenge posed by the rolling fog, which has been coming and going over the past week, our spirits remain high. As skippers, we understand the importance of visibility for a memorable experience, but rest assured, we prioritize safety and the quality of your wildlife encounters above all. If conditions ever become unsuitable for sailing, we do not venture out.
However, when the fog lifts, the rewards are plentiful. The sea is a treasure trove of wildlife, and our recent trips have been nothing short of spectacular.
Orcas, Minki, and Dolphins
This season has brought some thrilling marine sightings:
- Orcas: Local fishermen have reported sightings of Orcas in their usual haunt, a pattern that repeats around the same time every year. This consistency gives us hope for future encounters.
- Minke Whales: Although our quest to spot Orcas led to sightings of three Minke whales, which was a fantastic experience in itself, we remain hopeful for Orca sightings in the near future.
- Dolphins: Dolphins have been quite active recently, much to the delight of our guests. Their playful presence adds a special touch to our sea adventures.
One of our most heartwarming sightings has been Runny Paint, a beloved dolphin now 44 years old, gracing us with her presence again this season
