On the night of May 10th, the skies over the UK transformed into a scene straight out of a fairytale book. The Northern Lights, a breathtaking display of greens, pinks, and reds, danced across the horizon in a rare and stunning spectacle. Normally confined to the far northern latitudes, the aurora’s reach extended southeast, painting the night sky in hues that mesmerized all who were lucky enough to witness it.
I set out that evening with a sense of excitement and a camera ready to capture the magic. My first stop was the beach, where an old ship boiler, exposed on the sand years ago, stood as a unique feature against the backdrop of Inner Farne. As I arrived, the sky was already alive with shimmering lights, moving gracefully like a ballerina across a stage. The ancient boiler, with its weathered texture, provided a stark and captivating contrast to the ethereal beauty of the aurora above.
After capturing a few shots, I hopped into my van and headed to Bamburgh, aiming to photograph the majestic Bamburgh Castle. Upon arrival, however, I discovered that the floodlights illuminating the castle interfered with the clarity of my shots. Undeterred, I moved further away, hoping for a better angle. The further distance paid off; the castle stood proudly in silhouette against the vibrant colors of the sky, and the images turned out better than I had initially feared.
Next on my journey was Grace Darling’s grave, also in Bamburgh. As I walked through the graveyard in the middle of the night, a chill ran down my spine. It was a bit eerie, but the thought of capturing such a rare event from this historic and serene location drove me onward. The gravestones, bathed in the aurora’s glow, created an otherworldly ambiance. I believe the photos from this site captured the solemn beauty of the moment perfectly.
As the aurora began to fade, fatigue started to set in. I decided it was time to head home, but not before making one last stop at the harbor. I hoped to capture the remaining flickers of the lights reflecting off the water and the boats docked there. The aurora was dwindling quickly, but with a bit of luck and timing, I managed to get the shot I wanted.
Driving home, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for witnessing such a spectacular display. The Northern Lights had turned an ordinary evening into an extraordinary adventure, filled with moments of awe and wonder.
I hope everyone who saw the aurora that night enjoyed it as much as I did. Moments like these remind us of the natural beauty and mystery that surround us, often when we least expect it.
