April on the Farne Islands has been quite the weather rollercoaster. As we bid farewell to winter’s chill, we were met with a stubborn cold that lingered, accompanied by relentless rain that seemed determined to make its mark. Yet amidst the dreary weather, there’s always a silver lining, and for us, it’s the bustling activity of seabirds and occasional glimpses of dolphins frolicking in the waves.
The Farne Islands, renowned for their wildlife and rugged beauty, are a haven for seabirds. April sees them returning in droves, their raucous calls filling the air as they settle in for the breeding season. From puffins to guillemots, razorbills to terns, the cliffs come alive with a symphony of squawks and chirps, a sure sign that spring has indeed arrived.
But while the seabirds are busy building nests and tending to their young, we’ve found ourselves grappling with the whims of the weather gods. Cold fronts swept in with icy blasts, accompanied by sheets of rain that seemed determined to soak us through to the bone. It’s been a challenge for our team and visitors alike, as the tempestuous conditions have curtailed outdoor activities.
The rough seas and towering waves have meant many days spent landlocked, our boats tethered securely to the docks as we wait for calmer waters. It’s a reminder of the raw power of nature, humbling yet awe-inspiring in its might. And while we long to set sail and explore the rugged coastline, safety must always come first.
In the weather woes, there’s been no shortage of tasks to keep us occupied. Routine maintenance on our boats has been a top priority, ensuring they’re in prime condition for when the weather finally relents. Our bookings office has been a hive of activity, with rearrangements and reschedulings aplenty as we strive to accommodate our guests amidst the uncertainty.
Amidst the daily grind, there have been moments of magic too. A break in the clouds revealing a stunning sunset over the horizon, or the thrill of spotting dolphins playing in the waves. These small joys serve as reminders that even in the midst of adversity, there is beauty to be found if we only take the time to look.
As we bid farewell to April and welcome the promise of May, our hopes are pinned on brighter days ahead. We pray for sunshine and gentle breezes, for calm seas and clear skies. For now, we weather the storms and tend to our tasks, buoyed by the knowledge that better days are surely on the horizon.
As always thank you for reading our blog.
