Hello, fellow wildlife enthusiasts!

Hold onto your binoculars and sunhats because we have some truly fin-tastic news to share! On July 30th, 2024, we had the pleasure of spotting not one, not two, but THREE Risso’s Dolphins off the Inner Farne. That’s right – these incredible marine mammals decided to drop by and say hello, making for an unforgettable day on the water.

Risso’s Dolphins: The Rock Stars of the Sea

For those not in the know, Risso’s Dolphins are like the rock stars of the dolphin world. With their distinctive grey bodies and white scars (which are often a result of social interactions with other dolphins), they are quite a sight to behold. They can grow up to 13 feet long and weigh as much as 1,100 pounds. Their bulbous heads and playful nature make them a favorite among marine biologists and dolphin fans alike. This sighting is particularly special because Risso’s Dolphins aren’t everyday visitors to the Farne Islands. In fact, the last time these charismatic creatures were spotted in our waters was several years ago. It’s a real treat for our guests and a testament to the incredible biodiversity of the Northumberland coast.

A Marine Wonderland: Why Now?

So, why are we seeing so many marvelous marine mammals lately? Minke Whales, Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, White-beaked Dolphins and now Risso’s Dolphins seem to be popping up more frequently. Could it be climate change, or is it related to the recent ban on fishing sandeels near the Farnes? Who knows! But one thing is for sure – it’s absolutely amazing to witness such a variety of wildlife.

The ban on sandeel fishing might be a big factor. Sandeels are a crucial part of the marine food web, and their abundance could be attracting these larger predators. With fewer sandeels being fished out, there’s more for the dolphins and whales to munch on. It’s like opening an all-you-can-eat buffet for our marine visitors!

Adding to the magic, the weather has been perfect since the English kids broke up for the summer holidays. Clear skies, calm seas, and warm sunshine have made our boat trips even more enjoyable. Our guests’ faces light up with joy and wonder when they see these magnificent creatures up close. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of spotting a dorsal fin or seeing a dolphin leap out of the water.

Seeing the smiles and hearing the gasps of amazement from our guests is the best part of our job. We feel incredibly lucky to share these moments with you all. It’s not just about the dolphins or the whales; it’s about the shared experience and the connection to nature.

Did you know that Risso’s Dolphins are known for their acrobatic displays? They can often be seen breaching and slapping their tails on the water. They also have a unique diet compared to other dolphins, preferring squid over fish. Their social structures are fascinating too – they often travel in groups, sometimes forming lifelong bonds with each other. So why are Risso’s Dolphins choosing to visit Northumberland? The rich, productive waters around the Farne Islands provide an ideal habitat. The combination of plentiful food, protected areas, and clean waters makes it a perfect spot for these dolphins to thrive.
