If you’ve been anywhere near Seahouses recently, you’ll know that the weather has been throwing everything at us—but oh, what a show it’s been! The last few sunset cruises have delivered an unforgettable mix of sun, sea, thunder, lightning, and pure coastal magic.
Every evening has been like a box of chocolates—you never know what you’re going to get! (Sorry, I pinched that one from a famous film)
From Flat Calm to a Fire in the Sky
One evening started out with calm seas so smooth they looked like melted glass. We cruised out with the sun beginning its slow descent, golden light dancing off the ripples. But not long after, the sky darkened and, BOOM—a thunderstorm rolled in from nowhere. Thunder cracked overhead, the sea changed in mood, and then came the lightning.
It wasn’t just one flash. It was a full-on spectacular display, with forks dancing over Seahouses and streaks lighting up the sky above the Farne Islands. We watched it all from the boat, the warm air swirling around us in what felt like a midsummer dream.
And here’s the best bit. We were on our way back, and as usual, once the sun dips below the horizon, the temperature drops fast. Everyone was bundled up, hoods up, teeth chattering—except one gent at the front of the boat.
He started taking off his coat, pretending to mop sweat from his brow, and I laughed and said, “You alright up there?” He turned round, completely straight-faced and said, “Open your window! I’m not taking the mick—it’s roasting out here!”
So I did. And would you believe it? It was warm. Not just mild—actually warm. The storm down south had pushed a surge of hot air our way, and we’d sailed straight into it. I’ve worked on the water for years, but that was a first. To be surrounded by lightning and heat in the pitch dark was something I’ll never forget.

Guillemots, Rainbows and Sunset Dreams
Another night, we tucked the boat in beside the cliffs and stayed there for over half an hour, mesmerised, as the guillemot chicks (jumplings) launched themselves off the rocks and into the sea below. It’s a leap of faith they only make once—and every time it happens, it takes your breath away. No matter how many years I watch it, it still gives me goosebumps.
Then there was the cruise where we had the perfect start—sun dipping low, sea as calm as a pond—when suddenly the heavens opened and gave us a proper soaking. Torrential rain for half an hour had us all huddled under hoods… but then the skies cleared, and out came a double rainbow, glowing across the sky like something out of a dream. And just when we thought it couldn’t get better, the sunset lit up the whole horizon in pinks, golds and fiery oranges. A four-season cruise if there ever was one.

Why We Love Sunset Cruises
There’s just something about the sea at sunset. The light softens, the water turns to silver, and the seabirds—well, they come alive. Their calls grow louder, echoing around the rocks like a chorus. The puffins make their final dashes back to the burrows, the terns swoop low in the golden glow, and the cliffs are alive with movement and sound.
You get those moments where everything just… slows down. The sun melts into the sea, the last light glistens on the water, and you can’t help but stand still and soak it in.
And yes, sometimes we’re out later than planned. But honestly—who cares? We enjoy it every bit as much as our guests do. Some evenings, we could stay out all night.
So if you’re wondering whether to book a sunset trip—this is your sign. Join us for an evening of nature, light, wild skies and unforgettable moments. Bring your coat (just in case), and maybe a little sense of adventure.
